Do you have something in your closet that brings back all sorts of memories the minute you slip it on? For me, it’s this brown leather jacket.
I studied abroad in Rome one summer in college and our class took a weekend trip to Florence. Everyone, and I mean everyone, told me if I marked one thing off of my to-do list in that city aside from climbing the Duomo (check!), it would have to be a trip to the leather market. They assured me it would be worth the overwhelming crowds and sweltering heat. And trust me guys, it was.
There were bags and belts and jackets. And man, were there jackets. My friends snatched up the trendier ones — a patent red leather one, one adorned with fringe and one with studded leather. I wanted something more classic, which at the time felt boring and downright basic, but I’ve learned going with your instincts is often your best bet. And when it comes to investment pieces, selecting the classics is so worth it (they’ll last a lifetime!).
It was listed at 150 euro, but by some miracle, my limited (meaning zero) Italian skills got it down to 50 euro — roughly $70 at the time. Considering it’s nearly impossible to score a genuine leather jacket in the states for less than $100, I counted this a mini victory, and marched back to our hotel wearing it with pride.
I paired it with my new favorite blouse (seriously, this baby gets some serious wear), a pair of skinnies, brown pumps and a bucket bag. If I could wear jeans to work, this would be my ideal spring uniform!
